Machu Picchu sometimes called the "Lost City of the Incas" is a well-preserved pre-Columbian Inca ruin located above the Urubamba Valley in Peru. The famous destination was an astronomical observatory. Its sacred Intihuatana stone accurately indicates the two equinoxes (the "edge" between night and day). Twice a year, the sun sits directly over the stone creating no shadow. This destination is also the inspiration for the village of the Disney movie Emperor’s New Groove.

The vibrant green grass, huge rocky peaks, and magnificent stone ruins are all stunning. Once upon a time, this archeological marvel was an Inca city (in the 15th and 16th centuries). To get here, you'll need to plan ahead of time. The Inca Trail is only accessible twice a day (in the morning and afternoon), and you must either hike or take a bus from the adjacent town of Aguas Calientes to get there.

Follow in the footsteps of a real-life Indiana Jones to a citadel hidden in the mist of the Andean mountaintops. Machu Picchu is an awe-inspiring city at the heart of the fallen Inca Empire. These people forewent wheels, steel tools, or mortar to build, yet the settlement has held on through the ravages of time and earthquakes since the mid-14th century. Roam grassy plazas and fortified dwellings; and marvel at the pristine terraces carved into the peaks. Out-of-reach on its steep perch, Machu Picchu evaded discovery from even the Spanish conquistadors (soldiers and explorers) that wiped out the ancient kingdom. It would be hundreds of years later in 1911 before a local farmer, Melchor Arteaga, led Hiram Bingham III to the ruins. Bingham was a professor and explorer, much like the whip-wielding Indy would later be. Scholars to this day only infer the finer details of Machu Picchu, as the Incas did not use written language. Magellan's Cross
The site is said to be the exact location where Portuguese Magellan planted the cross upon his arrival in Cebu in March 1521. As stated on the marker at the bottom of the cross, the original artifact is encased inside the wooden Tindalo cross. The painted ceiling illustrates this historic event.
