One of two European Capitals of culture for 2020, Rijeka (literally "River") is Croatia's main port and has a fascinating history, it was ruled by eight different countries between 1918 and 1991. In the early 20th century, Rijeka was one of the major European ports with weekly passenger service to New York City. The ship Carpathia, which saved many of the survivors from the Titanic, was heading from New York to Rijeka.
